PLC, HMI and VFD Spares: What to Include in Your Enquiry
Automation parts are highly model specific. The details that make the difference between the right PLC module, HMI or drive and a costly mismatch.
Automation hardware is unforgiving of small differences. A PLC module with the wrong hardware version, an HMI with a different screen resolution or a drive with the wrong supply voltage can mean hours of extra engineering work — or a part that simply will not work in your system.
Here is what to include when you request automation spares, so that the quotation matches your installed equipment.
PLC systems
For PLC CPUs and modules, the full order number printed on the module label is essential. Include:
- The complete order or part number, including any version suffix
- Hardware and firmware versions, where shown
- The PLC family and the rack or backplane it sits in
- For communication modules, the network type
- A photo of the module label and of the module installed in the rack
If you are replacing a CPU, check with your engineer whether the program and configuration are backed up and whether a newer firmware version is acceptable.
HMI panels
For HMI panels, the part number on the rear label is the key detail. Also note the screen size, the connected PLC and the communication interface. Replacement with the identical model avoids converting the existing HMI project; a newer model may require project migration, which your integrator should assess.
VFD drives
For variable frequency drives, send the drive part number and, if possible, the details of the motor and application:
- Supply voltage and number of phases
- Motor power and full-load current
- Duty type — for example, pump, fan, conveyor or hoist
- Required options such as filters, braking resistors or communication cards
- Enclosure or mounting requirements
Sensors and smaller components
For sensors, power supplies, relays and interface modules, the part number usually tells the whole story. Where it is unreadable, list the sensing principle, range, output signal, supply voltage, connection type and housing size.
Send your list in one go
Automation requirements often come as a list — a failed module and several spares while you are at it. Sending a single list with part numbers and quantities lets a supplier quote everything together and flag any items that are obsolete or need an alternative.
